Here is a brief description of a typical race day:
At the start of the race day, racers arrive set up their pit space. Its first come first served for the pit space area. All you need to do is pick a table and set up. Please bring an extension cord. Its best if you can set up next to your race buddy who will help you with any questions you may have as the race day progresses. Your race buddy will be determined at the track that day.
After set up, the racers will be entered into the timing system and a posting of the races will be on the wall showing the racers and their race class, including frequencies. Check to see if all the information is correct. This will be the race schedule for the day.
Before we race, we have a Drivers Meeting to help explain all aspects of racing. Any questions can be addressed at this time. The racers will be informed how many races we will race, the length of the races, and a bit of the rules, including explaining staggered starts. Its assumed that every racer has read our rule book.
Staggered starts: Staggered starts begin with all racers on the track ready to race. The starting tone begins the race. However with this type of start, each racer can space themselves out about 1 second, to allow for cleaner starts (you can wait until the racer in front is around the first corner). Each racers race time begins once they cross the start/finish line and ends once their 5 minutes is completed. In this type of racing, each racer is racing against their own clock and not each other. Just a note, if there are faster racers, allow them to pass as it keeps everyone faster. Just so you are aware, a racer must start before the first racer completes his first lap. If that happens, all racers who have yet to start are forced to start (their timing clocks are force started).
Usually we race 3 qualifiers (which are raced using staggered starts) and one Main (which is a tone start where all racers go at the tone and are lined up on the long straight in order of qualifying) for a total of 4 races each week for each class of racing. The qualifiers are staggered starts, with the racers best qualifier time used to position them for the final race which is the Main. Each of the qualifiers will have printouts showing the race results with each lap timed and overall number of laps made within the 5 minute race. After the race, a racer has time to return to the pit table, set their radio and car down, turn them off, and return out to the track to corner marshal.
Corner marshalling is simply correcting a racers car on the track if its stuck or upside down. Caution has to be used while completing this task as these cars can be very quick. For safety ensure you are wearing good shoes! We can practice corner marshaling after the drivers meeting if requested.
A racer does not need to race every qualifier or race. However, the Main is what determines the final race day positions and points. The results of each Main are posted on our website.
A round of racing (a qualifier) is usually an hour long depending on how many racers and how many races in each round, so it should be enough time to charge or recharge batteries for your next race.
As for traction compound, for foams, our members are using either Jack the Gripper or Niftech at this time.
All a new racer has to do is complete a Race Registration Form and sign it. Other than that, have FUN!
Any other concerns during a race day, just come and see the race director.
